Venue Guide: Narrow Neck, Auckland

A Popin Wedding venue guide: Narrow Neck, Auckland

The Officers Mess has a properly interesting backstory for a wedding venue: it began life feeding the New Zealand Army and Navy at Fort Takapuna, a Category 1 Historic Building dating back to the 1880s. What we love about shooting here now is that none of that history has been polished away. You still get the heritage architecture and the sense of place, but paired with a genuinely spectacular clifftop outlook over the water to Rangitoto.

Why We Rate It

As photographers, we like venues that give us options when the weather doesn't cooperate, and The Officers Mess handles that better than most. There's a beautiful outdoor ceremony space with views to Rangitoto, but if it turns wet there are three separate indoor rooms to fall back on, each with its own character. It also genuinely functions as an all-in-one venue: ceremony, reception and after-party can all happen on site, so we're not chasing the bridal party between locations and losing light in the process.

It's also a fully catered venue with an award-winning chef on site, which takes a lot of the usual day-of coordination stress off the table. From what we've seen, that generally means a calmer, more relaxed couple by the time photos roll around, which always shows in the images.

Getting There

The Officers Mess sits at 170 Vauxhall Road, Narrow Neck, on the North Shore between Takapuna and Devonport, roughly 15 minutes from central Auckland. It's an easy drive for most guests, with parking on site, which is a genuine bonus for a clifftop venue with this kind of view.

The Spaces

The venue can accommodate up to 160 guests seated. The main indoor space is 132 square metres and can connect through to an adjoining 53.6 square metre room, with a third room available depending on your numbers, plus a large outdoor area and a deck that can be covered if needed. For couples who want their ceremony out on the reserve itself or down on the beach below the cliffs, that's possible too, though it requires a permit from the Department of Conservation since it falls outside the venue's own grounds.

Our Favourite Spots

The clifftop lawn with Rangitoto in the background is the obvious hero shot, and it earns its reputation. But we also love the indoor rooms for detail shots. The light through the historic windows is soft and even, which makes it one of the easier spots in Auckland to photograph table settings, cake details and getting-ready moments without fighting harsh shadows.

Our Planning Tips

Because The Officers Mess is a historic building, real flame candles aren't permitted indoors, though they are allowed on the deck and in the entranceway, so factor that into your styling if candlelight is important to you. Self-catering isn't an option beyond your wedding cake, since the venue handles all food in-house, but BYO wine or champagne is allowed for a per-person corkage fee if you'd rather bring your own. Venue hire pricing and minimum spends vary by day of the week, with a surcharge on public holidays, so it's worth getting a specific quote for your date early on.
