Photographing Weddings in Auckland's Public Parks and Gardens

Public parks and gardens make some of Auckland's best wedding backdrops, and some of its most misunderstood ones. Couples often assume a permit is a formality, or that one process covers every park. In practice, Auckland Botanic Gardens, Cornwall Park, the Domain and Western Springs run on genuinely different rules, and knowing which is which before falling in love with a spot saves a lot of late planning stress.

Which parks are actually realistic options

Of Auckland's public green spaces, four come up again and again for weddings: Auckland Botanic Gardens and Cornwall Park, which run their own dedicated wedding bookings, and the Auckland Domain and Western Springs, which sit under Auckland Council's general open space permit system. The first two are set up to say yes to a wedding. The second two are public parks that happen to allow one, with a longer, more general approval process behind it.

At a glance

  • Auckland Botanic Gardens and Cornwall Park run their own wedding bookings, with dedicated ceremony spots and clear guest caps.

  • The Domain and Western Springs go through Auckland Council's general event permit process instead, and lead times are longer.

  • The Domain specifically requires at least six months' notice, regardless of how small the ceremony is.

  • None of these four venues offer full exclusive use of the whole park, other visitors stay present throughout.

Auckland Botanic Gardens

Every wedding here needs an application, a permit and payment arranged through the Gardens' own venue team. Two spaces offer genuine exclusive use, closed to other visitors: the Glade, up to 120 guests, and the Edible Walled Garden, a smaller formal space for up to 50. Two more sites are open rather than exclusive: the Rock Garden, with a circular pergola and lake views for up to 70, and the brick-paved Herb Garden for up to 25. If exclusivity matters, that's the detail to check first, not every space here is closed off the way it might look in photos.

Cornwall Park

Cornwall Park runs its own booking process through the Cornwall Park Trust Board, separate from council altogether, and it's explicitly non-exclusive: park visitors keep using the surrounding area throughout. Three spots are set aside for ceremonies: the Grotto, a native bush pocket for 5 to 20 people with an adjacent lawn for bigger groups, the Kauri Steps, and the Belvedere, an open outlook with paddock and city views. Bookings max out at 100 guests with a 2-hour allocation, and decorations must be free-standing, nothing tied to trees or pegged into the ground.

The Domain and Western Springs

Both fall under Auckland Council's general public open space permit process, and the practical effect is a longer, more variable lead time. Council classifies events by impact: low impact needs at least 6 weeks' notice, medium impact at least 12 weeks, high impact at least 8 months. The Domain carries its own minimum on top, at least 6 months, no matter how small the ceremony. Western Springs follows the general bands instead, so the real notice period comes down to scale, catering, a marquee or amplified sound pushes it higher. Either way, a reception needs a private venue elsewhere, the park itself covers the ceremony only.

What "no exclusive use" actually means for planning and photos

Outside Botanic Gardens' two exclusive spaces, every location here stays open to the public during your ceremony. That changes how you plan. Weekday ceremonies or an earlier time slot mean fewer walkers and other visitors drifting through the background. It also affects where a photographer points the camera, framing tighter around the ceremony space rather than wide shots that pick up strangers, and timing portraits for a gap in foot traffic rather than assuming the space will clear on its own.

Weather and backup planning

Worth knowing

None of these four venues guarantee a wet-weather indoor swap as part of the booking. Botanic Gardens has some sheltered structures worth asking about; Cornwall Park and the council parks generally don't. Sort a genuine backup, a nearby function venue or marquee, before committing to a date rather than assuming the park has one built in.

What a photographer needs to know before the day

Light matters as much as venue choice. The Rock Garden's pergola and the Domain's mature trees throw useful shade through the middle of the day, good for a harsh-light ceremony slot, while open spots like the Belvedere and Western Springs' lake edge come into their own in the last hour before sunset. Busy public areas, main paths, playgrounds, the Domain's museum forecourt, are worth avoiding for portraits on a weekend, both for privacy and to keep strangers out of frame. A quick site visit beforehand, at the actual time the ceremony will run, tells a photographer more than any written brief.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need a permit just for photos, not a ceremony?

Generally no for a small, quick session, but check with the venue if bringing lighting or a larger group.

How far ahead should we apply?

At Botanic Gardens and Cornwall Park, as soon as a date is chosen. For the Domain, at least six months. For Western Springs, confirm the impact classification early.

Can we get exclusive use of a public park for our wedding?

Only at Botanic Gardens' Glade or Edible Walled Garden. Everywhere else on this list stays open to the public during your ceremony.
