Venue Guide: Auckland
Our take on Auckland's boutique city elopement hotel, from a photographer's point of view
The Hotel Britomart is the venue we point city-loving couples toward when they want something intimate rather than a big function. It's right in the Britomart precinct, and it was named #1 hotel in Aotearoa at the 2026 Tripadvisor Traveller's Choice Awards, which tells you a lot about the standard of the place before you've even booked anything. Here's our honest read on what an elopement or micro-wedding here actually looks like.
Why We Rate It
What we like about The Hotel Britomart is that it's built for exactly the kind of day a lot of our couples are actually asking for now, small guest lists, genuine architecture instead of generic function-centre styling, and zero need to leave the city. The exposed brick, timber, and textured concrete give us a completely different visual language to the vineyards and gardens we shoot most weeks, which we think makes for a gallery that stands out.
Getting There
The hotel sits at 29 Galway Street, right in the Britomart neighbourhood, so guests are arriving into the middle of downtown Auckland rather than driving out to a rural estate. For couples who want their wedding weekend to double as a city stay, that's a real advantage, everyone's already exactly where the after-party happens to be.
The Packages
There are four ways to do it here, and they scale nicely depending on what a couple actually wants. The Kōwhai Package is built for elopements and micro-weddings, up to 6 guests in one of the terraced Landing Suites, with bubbles, a cheese board, a petite cake, and an overnight stay with breakfast included. The Rōhi Package steps up to a proper intimate ceremony and seated dinner for 12 to 18 guests in The Libraries Lounge, with a ceremony setup, canapés, and a beverage package built in. The Pūriri and Pōhutukawa packages go further still, cocktail-style and larger seated formats respectively, with the Pōhutukawa accommodating 30 to 50 guests plus an optional ceremony add-on.
Our Favourite Spots
The Libraries is where we'd always want to end up for portraits here, dark timber, textured brick, and warm low lighting give us a completely different mood to daylight vineyard shots, more editorial, a bit moodier. The rooftop pavilion suites are worth asking about too if the timeline allows, they sit above the adjacent Buckland Building and give a genuinely private outdoor moment without leaving the hotel.
Our Planning Tips
Because the packages here are genuinely small-guest-count by design, we'd always tell a couple to lock in their headcount early, the Kōwhai Package tops out at 18 and the Rōhi similarly, so this isn't the venue for a guest list that might grow. If the goal is a proper elopement feel, we'd lean toward booking the overnight stay that comes with the Kōwhai Package, it turns the whole thing into a genuine weekend rather than a few hours in and out. And because the light indoors here is warm and low rather than bright and open, we'd always build in a few extra minutes to adjust for it, the mood is worth it.

The Hotel Britomart gives city couples a genuinely different option to the vineyards and gardens that dominate most Auckland wedding lists, which is exactly why we keep recommending it for elopements and small weddings. Because these are intimate, low-guest-count days that still move across multiple beautiful spaces in one building, this is a venue where our full-day coverage makes real sense, we can follow the whole arc from suite to Libraries to Courtyard without rushing. If you're getting married here and want a photography team that already knows how to work with this kind of low, warm light, get in touch with Popin Wedding to talk through your day.
