Venue Guide: Riverhead, Auckland

A Popin Wedding venue guide: Riverhead, Auckland

The Boat House sits right on the riverbank at Riverhead, near Kumeu, and it's one of the rare Auckland venues where the water itself becomes part of the ceremony rather than just scenery in the distance. Some couples and guests even arrive by ferry or private boat, which sets a genuinely different tone for the day before a single photo has been taken.

Why We Rate It

What we appreciate most about The Boat House as photographers is how seriously they take the weather backup plan. Instead of a tent thrown up as an afterthought, there's a permanent outdoor marquee that's light, airy and genuinely photogenic in its own right, so a rainy forecast never means settling for a lesser version of the day. Between the sweeping lawn, the marquee and the indoor spaces, the venue has a proper plan for every scenario, which takes a lot of pressure off timeline planning.

The venue was named the Winner of the 2025 Couples' Choice Award for Waterfront Wedding Venue, and from what we've seen that reputation is built on genuine attention to detail rather than just the view, right down to bespoke floor plans and food that consistently gets singled out in guest reviews.

Getting There

The Boat House is located in Riverhead, near Kumeu, about 25 minutes from central Auckland. It's an easy drive for most guests, and the riverside setting means it's also reachable by ferry or private boat for a genuinely memorable arrival.

The Spaces

The venue's flexible layout adapts to intimate gatherings right through to 100-plus guest weddings. Outdoors, couples can exchange vows on the sweeping lawn with the river as a backdrop, with the permanent marquee as an elegant wet-weather alternative that still keeps guests connected to the riverside views. Indoors, the reception spaces flow seamlessly from the outdoor areas, with long communal-style tables, festoon lighting and greenery installations giving the room real warmth after dark.

Our Favourite Spots

The lawn ceremony spot beneath the old tree is the standout for us, especially for golden hour portraits with the river as a backdrop. But the reception room after dark is just as strong a location for photography, since the festoon lighting and the hanging floral installation over the head table give us a completely different mood from the daylight ceremony shots, all on the same property.

Our Planning Tips

The Boat House runs seasonal wedding packages that change year to year, so it's worth requesting their current brochure directly rather than relying on older pricing you might find elsewhere. Their venue hire is genuinely all-inclusive, covering furniture, glassware, staffing, cleaning, a planning meeting and a rehearsal, which simplifies coordination considerably. Note that beverages are charged separately on consumption, and any extra styling or decor pack-down needs to be arranged with their team ahead of time.
