Venue Guide: Māngere

Our take on Māngere's private island estate, from a photographer's point of view

Puketutu is one of the few venues in Auckland where we genuinely feel the city fall away the moment we cross the causeway. It's known to Mana Whenua as Te Motu a Hiaroa, and the island carries real history, it was the first permanent home of the Tainui waka crew in Aotearoa, and it holds deep significance for Te Kawerau ā Maki, Te Waiohua, and Waikato-Tainui. Here's our honest read on what a wedding day on the island actually looks like.

Why We Rate It

What makes Puketutu different from most Auckland venues we shoot at is that the whole island is reserved exclusively for one wedding at a time. There's no other function running in the background, no shared car park, no second bridal party crossing your ceremony photos. For a couple who wants total privacy without leaving Auckland, this is about as close as it gets.

Getting There

The estate sits at 600 Island Road, Māngere, connected to the mainland by an all-tide causeway, so there's no boat or helicopter required to get guests there. It's a genuinely easy transition for everyone attending, but the causeway crossing itself has a way of quietly signalling that guests have left the ordinary behind.

The Homestead and Grounds

The estate's centrepiece is a beautifully restored Spanish Mission homestead, built during the decades Sir Henry Kelliher called the island home from 1938. He's also the reason the property has such a striking tree-lined driveway, he planted it himself, and it's still one of our favourite spots to shoot arrivals and getting-ready details, the light comes through dappled and soft even in the middle of the day.

Beyond the homestead, the grounds carry ancient garden terracing, stone walls, and harbour views across the Manukau that don't feel like Auckland at all. The Pavilion, the estate's dedicated event space, can host up to around 350 guests, which is a genuinely large number for a venue that still manages to feel intimate and private.

Food and Service

Puketutu partners with Urban Gourmet for catering, with menus built around seasonal, locally sourced produce. We think that attention to detail carries through the whole day here, this isn't a venue that treats catering as an afterthought to the setting.

Our Planning Tips

Because the island is reserved entirely for one event, we'd always encourage a couple to actually use that privacy, timeline the day so there's a proper window for portraits across the grounds without worrying about other guests or events crossing into frame. The tree-lined driveway is worth building into the timeline specifically, we always try to catch it in the softer light of late afternoon rather than the middle of the day. Pricing here is bespoke rather than published, so we'd suggest getting a firm quote from the estate early once you have a guest count in mind.

Puketutu gives a couple something genuinely rare in Auckland, total privacy on a piece of land with real history behind it, which is exactly why it's earned a spot on our list of favourite venues. Because the whole island is exclusive to one wedding for the day, this is a venue where our full-day coverage makes the most sense, there's simply too much ground and too much changing light to capture properly in anything shorter.
