Public Holiday and Long Weekend Wedding Dates in NZ

A Saturday wedding is still the default in New Zealand, but a growing number of couples are picking their date around a public holiday on purpose. It's not about the holiday itself, it's about what it does for everyone travelling to be there.

At a glance

  • A Mondayised holiday means guests don't need to burn annual leave to travel for your wedding.

  • Long weekends are especially useful for interisland, Pacific and overseas guests weighing up the trip.

  • The trade-off: venues book out faster and some charge a premium for holiday-weekend dates.

  • Popular long weekends, like Labour Day and Waitangi Day, can sell out 12+ months ahead.

Why couples pick long weekends on purpose

A standard Saturday wedding asks a lot of anyone flying in. Guests from the South Island, from overseas, or simply from a few hours' drive away often need to take a Friday off work, and sometimes a Monday too, just to make the trip worthwhile. Build the wedding around a Mondayised public holiday instead, and that Friday or Monday is already a day off for most people. Nobody has to burn annual leave to be there, which matters more than it sounds for guests who'd otherwise have to weigh the cost of a flight against a single day of paid leave.

It's a genuinely NZ-shaped problem, too. Auckland weddings routinely pull in Wellington and South Island family, Pacific and Australian relatives, and friends scattered well beyond driving distance. A long weekend turns a tight one-day trip into something closer to a short break, which tends to mean more of the people you actually want there can justify making the trip.

The trade-off nobody mentions

Here's the part that gets left out of most "get married on a long weekend" advice: everyone else has had the same idea. Venues and vendors that are quiet on an ordinary Saturday get booked out fastest on the Saturdays either side of a public holiday, and some charge a premium specifically for holiday-weekend dates. Popular long weekends, particularly Labour Day and Waitangi Day, can sell out at sought-after venues 12 months or more ahead of the date.

The other detail worth knowing: accommodation prices for your travelling guests often rise around the same holiday weekend, for the same reason everyone else is trying to get away. If you're set on a long weekend date, book your venue and give guests notice earlier than you would for a standard Saturday, not later.

One weekend that's easy to overlook

Auckland Anniversary Day is easy to miss because it's a regional holiday rather than a nationwide one, so it doesn't show up on generic wedding-date lists built for a national audience. For a wedding based in Auckland, it works exactly like any other long weekend for local guests, and unlike Waitangi Day or Labour Day, it tends to be less competitively booked simply because fewer couples think to check for it.

The long break that's usually not worth chasing

The Christmas and New Year period technically delivers the longest run of consecutive public holidays in the NZ calendar, but it's rarely worth building a wedding around. Guests are already juggling family commitments, travel plans and annual leave of their own during that stretch, and a lot of venues either close over the break or charge peak-season rates regardless of the specific date. If you want a summer wedding, the weeks either side of the Christmas/New Year period tend to work better than the holiday itself.

Frequently asked questions

Do venues really charge more for public holiday weekends?

Some do, particularly for the most popular long weekends like Labour Day and Waitangi Day. It's worth asking directly when you enquire rather than assuming the rate is the same as a standard Saturday.

How far ahead should we book a long weekend wedding date?

Earlier than you would for a standard Saturday. Popular long-weekend dates at sought-after venues can be booked out 12 months or more in advance.

Is Auckland Anniversary Day a public holiday everywhere in New Zealand?

No. It's a regional anniversary observed in the Auckland and Northland region, not a nationwide holiday, which is part of why it's often overlooked as a wedding-date option.
