Venue Guide: Waiheke Island

Our take on Auckland's most requested Waiheke Island venue, from a photographer's point of view

Mudbrick keeps coming up every time a couple asks us for Auckland venue recommendations, and honestly, we get why. Perched at the top of Waiheke Island with the Hauraki Gulf spread out behind it, this is one of those rare venues where almost every angle photographs well without much effort from us. Here's our honest read on what to expect on the day, from ceremony spots to reception logistics, based on what we look for as photographers.

Why We Rate Mudbrick

We think Mudbrick's real strength is that it doesn't force you to choose. You get vineyard rows, a private garden ceremony spot, a wine list worth talking about, and on-site accommodation, all on one property. It's a proper destination wedding feel that's still only 40 minutes from downtown Auckland, which we love because it means guests can commit to the day without a huge logistical headache.

Getting There

The ferry over from downtown Auckland takes 35 to 45 minutes, then a short transfer from Matiatia wharf. Our advice to couples: check the return sailing times before you lock in your reception finish time, the last ferry back to the city runs earlier than most receptions wind down. If guests don't want to deal with the boat twice in one day, the on-site rooms or a nearby bach solve that easily.

Ceremony Locations

Mudbrick gives you an outdoor and an indoor option, and we usually tell couples to pick based on season rather than trying to future-proof against weather. The outdoor spot has the vineyard and water right behind the aisle, so it barely needs styling, we'd always rather see a couple spend their florals budget on the reception table than compete with a view like that.

For the indoor ceremony, the clear roofline lets in a surprising amount of natural light, it's a genuinely good option for a winter date, not just a rain plan. We like that it sits right next to the outdoor terrace too, so a last-minute call on the morning of doesn't mean losing the atmosphere.

Reception Spaces

The main dining room holds up to around 126 guests with a bridal table, and scales down comfortably for an intimate 40-guest wedding too. Layout is flexible around the bar, dance floor and cake table, the venue's own coordinators handle that side well. If a couple wants a different energy for the later part of the night, moving upstairs for dancing is a nice reset.

Food and Wine

This is the part we'd call Mudbrick's biggest selling point. It's an actual working vineyard with its own cellar door, and the wedding menu draws straight from that wine list. The food is restaurant grade, not standard event catering, and we think that shows in how guests react at the tables. If a couple cares about the meal being genuinely good and not just serviceable, this venue delivers.

Best Photo Spots, Our Picks

This is the question we get asked most, so here's our honest shortlist. We're always drawn to the light on the hilltop lawns and the clay driveway through the vines in the late afternoon, it has a warm, slightly golden quality that we don't get tired of. The long grass field near the trig point is one of our favourites for portraits, the whole gulf sits behind the couple as a backdrop and it barely needs any direction from us.

Give yourself 20 to 30 minutes to drive two or three minutes off property too. There's a lookout with a proper panoramic water view, and a couple of beaches nearby with rock textures you won't find on the estate itself. We always try to build that window into the timeline if we can.

Getting Ready and Accommodation

Two separate getting ready rooms at The Lodge mean both sides of the wedding party can prep without running into each other, which we're always glad to see, it keeps the morning calmer. The property's own cottages are a lovely option for the wedding night, and we'd recommend booking one early if that's part of the plan.

Our Planning Tips

Mudbrick books out fast, summer and autumn dates especially, often a year or more ahead. Our biggest piece of advice: build your ceremony time around the light rather than a fixed hour, it makes a real difference to how the photos turn out. Trust the venue's coordinators on timing too, they run weddings here every week and know the rhythm of the place better than anyone. And if there's a boat transfer anywhere in the day, give it more buffer than feels necessary, island time is real.
