Castaways Resort: Our Guide to This Clifftop Wedding Venue

A Popin Wedding venue guide: Waiuku, West Auckland
We've photographed weddings all over Auckland, but there's still nothing quite like the drive out to Castaways. You wind through farmland, the road narrows, and then suddenly the trees open up and you're looking straight down a cliff at black sand and the Tasman Sea. It genuinely gets a reaction out of guests every single time, and it's one of our favourite venues to shoot precisely because the location does so much of the work for you.
Why We Rate It
Castaways is a resort first and a wedding venue second, and honestly that's part of the appeal. Couples and their guests can arrive the day before and actually settle in, rather than everyone rushing in for a 2pm ceremony and rushing out again. From a photography point of view, that changes the whole day. We get golden hour without anyone needing to drive anywhere, we can shoot getting-ready shots in real rooms with good light instead of a cramped hotel bathroom, and there's a day spa on site if the bridal party wants to actually relax before the ceremony rather than just get ready in a hurry.
The clifftop ceremony point is the big drawcard, and for good reason: it's dramatic without needing any decoration at all. But we always tell couples not to overlook the indoor ceremony option too. If the wind picks up (and out on that coast, it sometimes does), the ocean-view indoor space still gives you those big glass views without anyone shivering through their vows.
Getting There
Castaways sits at Karioitahi Beach, Waiuku, roughly an hour's drive south-west of central Auckland. It's far enough to feel like a proper destination for your guests, but still a manageable day trip or overnight stay for most of the region. We'd recommend blocking out extra travel time for your photographer and any suppliers driving from the city, since the last stretch of road is rural and slower going than the motorway makes it look on a map.
The Spaces
The resort can host up to around 120 guests, which keeps things feeling intimate rather than like a conference. Ceremony options are the outdoor Ceremony Point on the cliff edge or an indoor space with ocean views as a wet-weather backup. For the reception, couples typically use the resort's function spaces, and there's on-site accommodation in the chalets so the wedding party and guests can stay the night rather than everyone driving home in the dark.
Our Favourite Spots
The obvious one is the cliff edge itself at Ceremony Point, especially in the last hour of light when the black sand and the sea both go gold. But we also love shooting couples portraits along the coastal walking tracks a little further from the ceremony area: you get the same dramatic backdrop without a hundred guests in the background, and it gives the couple a genuinely quiet moment together mid-afternoon. The chalets themselves are also great for relaxed, candid getting-ready photos, especially with the ocean visible through the windows.
Our Planning Tips
Because it's a resort, we'd suggest treating your wedding here almost like a mini weekend away rather than a single-day event. Encourage guests to book accommodation early, as the on-site chalets are limited and popular. If an outdoor clifftop ceremony is the plan, it's worth having a loose backup timing in mind for wind, since it's an exposed coastal spot. And if it's just the two of you (or a very small group), Castaways also offers elopement packages, which we think are a lovely, low-stress way to get married at a location like this without the logistics of a full wedding.

If you're drawn to the idea of a clifftop ceremony and a weekend away rather than a rushed single day, Castaways is well worth a visit. We offer full-day wedding coverage that suits a venue like this particularly well, since so much of what makes it special happens outside the ceremony itself: the drive in, the golden hour on the cliff, the morning after.
