Venue Guide: Bombay

Our take on Bombay's olive grove estate, from a photographer's point of view

Bracu is one of those venues that genuinely earns the word oasis. It's about 40 minutes south of central Auckland in Bombay, and the moment you're walking between the mature olive groves it stops feeling like you're anywhere near the city. Here's our honest take on what a wedding day at Bracu looks like.

Why We Rate It

What we like most about Bracu is that it doesn't ask you to choose between a rustic, grown-in-the-ground feel and a genuinely polished event. The olive groves and rolling hills do the heavy lifting on atmosphere, while the venue itself, the food, the styling, the coordination, is properly considered rather than an afterthought.

Getting There

Bracu sits at 49 Main Road, Bombay, around 40 minutes from central Auckland. It's far enough out to feel like a proper destination for the day without asking too much of your guests travel-wise.

The Marquee

The Marquee is Bracu's dedicated wedding space, and we like that it's built to work in any season, an elegant white canopy with softly draped interiors and transparent walls that can be fully opened to the groves or closed up if the weather turns. It holds up to 100 seated or 130 standing, which gives couples a decent amount of flexibility on guest count and format.

Because the walls can open right up, we think this space photographs completely differently depending on how it's set, opened out it reads as an outdoor wedding with all the shelter of an indoor one, closed in it goes soft and intimate, especially once the lighting comes on in the evening.

Ceremony and Reception

Bracu's team is used to running both ceremony and reception on site, and the surrounding groves give a couple plenty of options for where to actually say their vows, whether that's right by the Marquee or further into the olive trees for a more private, tucked-away feel. Our honest advice is to walk the grounds with your coordinator early, the light and the framing change a lot depending on which row of trees you're standing in.

Food

Bracu's food reputation isn't just a wedding thing, the estate runs its own restaurant on site and has built a genuine name for its kitchen. We think that pedigree shows in the wedding menu too, this isn't function catering dressed up, it's a proper meal, and we always notice when a venue's food gets guests talking as much as the setting does.

Our Planning Tips

Because the Marquee is genuinely all-weather, Bracu is a solid pick if you want the look of an outdoor, garden-style wedding without gambling on an Auckland forecast. We'd suggest deciding early whether you want the walls open or closed for your ceremony time, it changes the light and the whole feel of the photos, and it's easier to plan around than to decide on the day. And if the estate's olive oil production is something that interests you or your guests, ask your coordinator, it's a nice detail to weave into the day if you want something a bit different from the usual favours.
