Venue Guide: Kumeu
Our take on Kumeu's heritage villa and marquee estate, from a photographer's point of view
Allely Estate is the venue we point couples toward when they want scale without losing the garden-party feel, it's about 20 minutes from central Auckland out in Kumeu wine country. The estate pairs a turn-of-the-century villa with a permanent marquee that has a six-metre-high ceiling and chandeliers, so a couple genuinely gets a heritage building and a purpose-built reception space in one property. Capacity runs from intimate groups of around 70 right up to 400 for a large marquee wedding, which is a wider range than most Kumeu venues offer.
Why We Rate It
What stands out to us about Allely Estate is how many distinct looks we can get across one wedding day without leaving the property. There's the villa's wraparound veranda for a classic portrait backdrop, the manicured gardens and courtyards for ceremony and cocktail hour, and the marquee itself, which reads far more elegant than a standard tent thanks to the height of the ceiling and the chandeliers hanging inside it. Allely Estate has also been named the venue for the NZ Bride & Groom Magazine Wedding of the Year, which says a lot about how the space photographs when it's fully styled.
Getting There
The estate sits at 393 State Highway 16, Kumeu, open by appointment only, which keeps the grounds private and uncluttered for whichever wedding is on that day. Being 20 minutes from central Auckland means guests get a genuine countryside feel without a long drive, and it makes for an easier day for us logistically compared to venues further out on Waiheke or in the deeper wine country.
The Spaces
Allely Estate offers a genuine choice of ceremony and reception locations within the one property, an outdoor ceremony in front of the hedge with fairy lights overhead, a reception inside the marquee, or a wet-weather fallback into the villa itself. The team includes a free event planner as part of the package, which we've found makes a real difference to how smoothly the day runs, particularly for couples juggling cultural requirements like halal catering or a Chinese tea ceremony, both of which Allely Estate caters for as standard. There's also a 1am liquor licence, so the dancing doesn't have to wrap up early.
Our Favourite Spots
For portraits, the open field next to the estate is the spot we'd always try to build into the timeline, it gives us a completely different, wide-open backdrop compared to the manicured formality of the gardens closer to the villa. The courtyard areas are worth a second look too, especially for first dances when the ceremony has to move indoors for weather, the cobbled surfaces and greenery give us a softer, more intimate frame than the marquee's open floor.
Our Planning Tips
Because Allely Estate can scale from 70 to 400 guests, we always tell couples to lock in a realistic headcount early, it changes how the marquee gets laid out and how much room there is for a dance floor without needing to reposition tables. If a couple wants photos in the open field, we'd build that into the timeline before the light gets too flat, ideally straight after the ceremony while everyone's still dressed and the energy is high. And with the venue's own event planner already coordinating vendors, we find communication in the lead-up tends to be more efficient than at venues without in-house planning support.
