A Tide-Timed Wedding at Whananaki

Timing a Ceremony to the Tide at Whananaki
Ashleigh and Sam were married on the grass beside the local community hall at Whananaki, a small coastal settlement in Northland about an hour beyond Whangarei, in front of around 70 guests. Rather than picking a ceremony time and working around it, the couple built their whole afternoon around the tide charts, timing the vows so the water sat in behind them exactly when they needed it. It's a small piece of planning that says a lot about how much this particular stretch of coastline meant to them.
A Destination Wedding Worth the Drive
Full day coverage carried through from bridal party preparations to the ceremony by the water, portraits around the settlement, and a reception that ran late into the evening with speeches, cake and a first dance. For a wedding this far from the city, that mattered. Most guests were travelling to be there, and having the whole day documented meant nothing about the trip felt wasted. Northland's coastline did the rest, open water, soft afternoon light and a genuinely unhurried pace that's hard to find much closer to Auckland.
Planning a Northland Coastal Wedding
For couples weighing up Whananaki or elsewhere along this stretch of Northland, Ashleigh and Sam's day is a good example of what's possible once you build the tides and travel time into the plan. Allow extra time for the drive and for a photography team to come with you, and the reward is a wedding day with the whole coastline to itself.
