Whipped Cakery: The Albany Bakery Turning a Pandemic Setback Into Auckland's Prettiest Buttercream Cakes
Vendor Spotlight: Cakes
We round out our cake makers series with a shop we keep coming back to on the North Shore. Whipped Cakery started in July 2020, right after co-founder Alyssa was made redundant because of Covid-19. Instead of waiting for another job to turn up, she teamed up with her sister-in-law Jay and started baking, and what began as word-of-mouth cupcake orders turned into a full retail store in Albany. If you have ever had a stray thought about what to do after a setback, this is a nice one to keep in your back pocket.

Why We Recommend Them
Whipped Cakery's whole style is built around what they call buttercream works of art, and once you have seen a few of their cakes you will understand why that is not just a slogan. They favour clean, sculptural piping, sail-shaped fondant or buttercream accents, and soft dried floral trims rather than anything overly sweet or fussy, which photographs beautifully next to the kind of textured, neutral wedding styling that is everywhere in Auckland right now. As a two-woman team who built the business from the ground up, they are also genuinely easy to deal with, which counts for a lot when you are juggling a dozen other wedding vendors.
What They Offer
The cake side of things covers custom wedding cakes, birthday cakes, cupcakes, cakesicles, macarons and monogrammed treats, all made from their A-grade certified kitchen in Rosedale. For weddings specifically, they work from an online enquiry form where you share your date, guest numbers, flavour preferences and colour or theme direction, and they take it from there. They do not run formal wedding cake tasting boxes, but you can try their cabinet cupcakes in person Tuesday to Saturday to get a feel for their flavours before committing. A nice touch is that their sweet treats, cupcakes, cakesicles and the like, can double as personalised wedding favours or place settings, so you can potentially cover dessert and a small styling detail with the one vendor.

The Experience
Delivery is preferred over pickup for wedding cakes given how delicate the tiered designs can be, and they charge a straightforward one dollar per kilometre return trip from their Rosedale kitchen, subject to scheduling. As with most of the smaller bakeries we have featured in this series, we would not treat any of this as fixed pricing since none of it is published for wedding-specific work, so we would always recommend getting a proper quote once your date and rough guest count are locked in.
Our Tips
Because delivery is based on distance from Rosedale, factor that into your budget early if your venue is out west or south of the city, it will not be a huge cost but it is worth knowing about upfront. If you like the idea of matching cupcakes or cakesicles as favours, mention that in your very first enquiry rather than as an afterthought, since it is easier for them to plan production if the full order is clear from day one. And if you are local enough to swing by Tuesday to Saturday, tasting a few cabinet cupcakes in person is a good way to get a sense of their flavour work before you commit to a full wedding order.
