SABE Bespoke House: Auckland's Home of Hand-Finished Wedding Tailoring
Updated: Aug 29
Vendor Spotlight: Suits & Menswear
Every wedding we shoot has a moment where the groom catches sight of himself in the mirror before the ceremony and just... stands a little taller. We've seen that moment happen in a lot of suits over the years, but it happens most often when the suit is bespoke. SABE Bespoke House, tucked into a character villa on Manukau Road in Epsom, has been building that moment for Auckland grooms since 1999, and it's one of the first places we point couples when they ask us who does proper made-to-measure tailoring in the city.

Why We Recommend Them
SABE is run by Vinny, a tailor who trained the old way and still hand-finishes garments in-house rather than sending them offshore. That matters more than most couples realise. A hand-finished buttonhole, a properly padded lapel, a jacket that's been cut to someone's actual shoulders instead of a size chart, these are things a camera picks up on even when nobody in the room consciously notices them. We've photographed enough off-the-rack suits pulling at the shoulders or bunching at the back to know the difference a bespoke build makes in photos, especially in the wide shots where the groom is standing still and the fabric has nowhere to hide.
SABE also trains apprentices on-site, so there's a genuine sense of a working tailoring house rather than a showroom, sewing machines going, fabric bolts stacked to the ceiling, pattern paper everywhere. It's the kind of place that makes you believe the finished suit actually earned its price tag.
What They Offer
Fully bespoke suits and jackets cut and hand-finished from scratch, made-to-measure shirts, custom shoes and leather accessories, and a genuinely useful alterations service for couples who already own a suit but need it adjusted for the day. For weddings specifically, they'll take a groom (and his groomsmen, if the whole party wants to match) through fabric selection, silhouette, and fitting over several appointments, which is a longer process than a rental but a completely different result.

The Experience
Expect a proper consultation rather than a quick measure-and-go. Vinny talks through what the fabric and cut need to do for the specific wedding, an outdoor vineyard ceremony calls for different weight cloth than a winter church wedding, and grooms we've worked with say the fitting appointments feel more like a conversation than a transaction. Because everything is made from scratch, timelines need to be booked well ahead of the wedding date; this isn't a suit you order six weeks out.
Our Tips
Bring reference photos of the actual wedding, the venue, the season, the colour palette, so Vinny can steer fabric choice accordingly. If groomsmen are being outfitted too, book everyone's first fitting in the same window so the whole party's timeline stays aligned. And if you want that mirror moment we mentioned earlier to actually happen on camera, schedule your final fitting close enough to the wedding that the suit is fresh, not sitting in a garment bag for two months.

We always say the suit is half the groom's photos, and a suit that's actually been built for the person wearing it shows up differently on camera than one that's just been picked up in the right size. If you're getting married around Auckland and want your tailoring to hold up next to the rest of your photos, SABE is worth the visit. And once the fittings are booked, we'd love to be the ones capturing the finished result on the day.
