RJB Design: Britomart's Answer to True Bespoke Tailoring

Vendor Spotlight: Suits & Menswear

There's a difference between made-to-measure and bespoke that most people only really understand once they've had a bespoke suit made. Made-to-measure adjusts an existing pattern to fit you better. Bespoke starts with a pattern cut from scratch, for your body, and nobody else's. RJB Design, tucked into a flagship store on Tyler Street in Britomart, has been doing the latter in Auckland since 1999, and after 25 years in the trade they're one of the more established names we point serious grooms toward.

Why We Recommend Them

RJB's philosophy is summed up in their own line: made by individuals, for individuals. That's not just marketing copy, it shows in how they run a bespoke commission, an individually cut pattern built around one client's measurements and posture, rather than a standard block adjusted to fit. For a groom who wants his suit to be the one thing on the day that's entirely his own, cut for nobody else, that difference is worth the investment.

We also like that they haven't chased volume. A shop that's been operating for over two decades in the same city, with a flagship store in one of Auckland's most considered retail precincts, is a shop that's built its name on the work holding up, not on turning over as many suits as possible.

What They Offer

Full bespoke tailoring with hand-cut personal patterns and multiple fittings, made-to-measure suits with a 4 to 6 week delivery window, a ready-to-wear range with in-house alterations, wedding suit tailoring with dedicated styling guidance, black tie and evening wear, and corporate packages for clients who need tailoring outside of wedding season too.

The Experience

Book a consultation at the Britomart flagship on Tyler Street, open seven days (Mon-Fri 9am-5:30pm, Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 11am-4pm), and expect the bespoke process to run over several appointments rather than a single visit: an initial consultation and measurement, a baste fitting to check the pattern on the body, and a final fitting once the garment is finished. For wedding parties, RJB offers styling guidance across the whole group so the groom and groomsmen land on a coherent look rather than everyone choosing independently.

Our Tips

Book the first consultation well ahead of the wedding date, since true bespoke with multiple fittings takes longer than made-to-measure or ready-to-wear. If budget is the main constraint, ask about their made-to-measure or ready-to-wear ranges, both still benefit from RJB's fitting expertise and in-house alterations at a lower starting price than full bespoke. And bring the wedding's colour palette and season to the first appointment so fabric selection can be steered accordingly from day one.

A suit cut from an individual pattern carries itself differently in photos than one that's simply been altered to fit, and after 25 years of doing exactly that, RJB Design has the process down. If you're an Auckland groom who wants tailoring that's genuinely bespoke, this is one of the first names on our list. Once the suit's finished, we'd love to help capture it.
