Payne Tailors: Fifty Years of Bespoke Craft in the Heart of Parnell
Updated: Aug 29
Vendor Spotlight: Suits & Menswear
There is a particular kind of quiet confidence that comes from a groom who knows his suit was built for him and no one else, and every time we photograph a wedding party that has come out of Payne Tailors on Parnell Road, we notice it before we even ask where they got dressed. This is a house that has been fitting Auckland grooms since 1969, and it shows in the details we end up lingering on with our lenses.

Why We Recommend Them
Payne Tailors is one of the oldest working tailoring houses in the city, founded by Burt Payne back in 1969 and carried forward since 1997 by Master Tailor Nasir Ali. That kind of continuity matters more than people expect. It means the fitting techniques, the hand-finishing, the eye for how a jacket should sit across the shoulders, have all been refined over decades rather than seasons. As photographers, we notice the difference immediately in how a suit photographs from behind at the altar, where a rushed off-the-rack jacket will always show its shortcuts.
What They Offer
Their process runs to eight steps, from the first consultation through fabric selection, design discussion, multiple fittings, hand-constructed tailoring, final adjustments, finishing touches, and a careful delivery. Nothing about it feels hurried. On the fabric side, they work with proper suiting houses (we spotted Scabal swatches on our visit), which gives grooms real choice beyond the standard navy and charcoal options most rental suits are stuck with.

The Experience
Parnell Road has a nice unhurried feel to it, and Payne Tailors' fitting rooms match that pace. Grooms typically start the process a few months out from the wedding, which gives room for at least a couple of fittings before the final suit is ready. We always tell our couples that the extra lead time on a bespoke groom's suit is worth it, both for comfort on the day and for how much better tailored menswear photographs compared to something pulled off a rack the week before.
Our Tips
Bring reference photos of jackets or details you like, even from other eras or films. A good tailor can translate a mood board into cloth and cut far better than a verbal description. If you are coordinating groomsmen too, ask about matching or complementary fabrics rather than identical suits. It reads much better in photos when there is subtle variation rather than a wall of identical grey.

A well-tailored suit is one of the few wedding day details that holds up in every single photo, from the ceremony through to the last dance, so it is worth getting right. If you are still finalising your wedding photography alongside your groom's suit fitting, we would love to be part of the day too, from the first fitting stories you tell us about to the final farewell.
