Vendor Spotlight: Cake Makers
Wedding cakes are one of those details that photograph beautifully when they are done well, and Bluebells Cakery is a name that comes up again and again when our couples are choosing who to trust with theirs. We wanted to put together a proper introduction, because the story behind this one is a genuinely lovely bit of small-business history.

Why We Recommend Them
Bluebells Cakery was founded by Karla Goodwin, whose love of baking started young and took her all the way to a junior baker role at Primrose Bakery in London before she returned home to New Zealand. She started out baking from her parents' kitchen and selling to family and friends, then secured a stall at La Cigale, Auckland's well-loved boutique French market. From there she moved into a community centre kitchen before finally opening a permanent space of her own in 2012, and the business has grown from that single kitchen into three Auckland locations today.
What we love about their cakes from a photography standpoint is the attention to fine detail work, whether that is delicate hand-piped florals, a textured buttercream finish, or a clean, architectural tiered silhouette. It is the kind of craftsmanship that holds up beautifully under close-up photography.
What They Offer
Bluebells Cakery describes their team as cake experts who help bring your dream cake to life, whether you are planning a grand event or an intimate celebration. They offer fully iced and semi-naked finishes, cakes with favours, and full custom design work. For couples still deciding on flavours and style, they run a wedding cake consultation for $75, which runs for thirty minutes and includes tastings of eight different cake flavours for two people, plus tea or coffee. A wedding cake sampler can also be ordered separately if you would rather taste at home.
Full wedding cake pricing is quoted individually through their online enquiry form based on size, design and flavour, so we would recommend getting in touch directly for a current quote. Cakes are baked and hand-finished fresh out of their Kingsland kitchen, with delivery available to Auckland venues or pickup if you prefer.

The Experience
Bluebells Cakery has grown into a genuinely substantial operation, now employing around 45 staff across their Kingsland cafe, their CBD location at Commercial Bay, and a cafe in the Auckland Domestic Airport terminal. Despite that growth, the wedding side of the business still feels personal, with consultants like Emma walking couples through flavour options and design choices one on one.
For us, working alongside a cake this well finished means we can get in close on the cake table without worrying about the details falling apart under scrutiny. Fine piping work and hand-painted florals like theirs give us wonderful macro shots to add to a couple's gallery.
Our Tips
Book your consultation early, especially if you are getting married in the busier spring and summer months, since good cake studios fill their calendars well in advance. And if you are working with us for photography too, let us know roughly when the cake will be cut so we can make sure we are in position for it, along with any earlier detail shots of the cake table itself.
